Pilkington K

Pilkington ‘K’ should be now considered the new bare minimum that you use in any glazing application. It is a hard coat low emissive glass, which can be used in the same manor as Float glass used to be. As the coating is applied to one surface during manufacture it can be cut and toughened in the normal manor. It should only be used with the coated side towards the air space, and the pane with the coating to the inner side of the building. This does lead to problems when used with Pattern glasses, which incorporate either, the "pseudo” Georgian grills or leaded effects. and the pattern the outer pane, "pseudo” Georgian grill is obscured, and with leaded glass only the outer side would have the lead applied.

How is it done? The double-glazed sealed unit is constructed using specially coated glass (which visually is almost indistinguishable form normal glass). This 'K' glass pane has microscopic particles of metal applied which, while it lets the warmth of sun pass through (short-wave radiation), it reflects heat from fires and radiators (long-wave radiation) back in to the room. The effect is that the whole room feels warmer and requires less energy to keep it that way. This is the heat which normal double-glazing would allow to escape. Even to touch the glass feels warmer. It is this warmth that helps to reduce the incidence of condensation even further. As the chart above illustrates there is 46% reduction in heat loss, when Pilkington 'K' glass is used compared with conventional double-glazing.

Condensation and low ‘E’ The warm feel of the inner surface of a Double-glazed sealed-unit should significantly reduce any incidence of internal condensation. With all new high performance glazing there is a phenomenon of external glass condensation. Several factors influence this. With single glazing with its poor thermal properties this meant that the outside of the glass was warm. The new generation of high performance double glazing which reflects the heat back into the room quite effectively, however leaves the outer pane cold to touch, giving any moisture in the air a cold spot to appear on.
